If you ain’t smooth on the sponge stroke, you ain’t nothin’! . Lithographers know. Paper Marblers know. Anyone that crushes paper under obscene pressure in an etching press knows. . Sponging is one of the silliest things to get good at, but once you have the touch, you don’t trust just anybody to do your sponging for you. . Here I’m treating pre-marbled paper with another layer of alum so it can be overmarbled. Smoothing the paper under the sponge so it doesn’t wrinkle, but also finishing in so few strokes that you won’t disturb the first layer of color is a balance. . Everyone loves a good video of expressive artists letting loose in their medium, right? . Marbling fast and aggressive is fun to watch, but doesn’t do much to improve your finished products. In fact, in my workshops I teach people to slow down and have control. When you speed up, you push paint under the surface, you create bubbles, and you stress the ink layer on top. These all lead to aberrations in the finished design. . However! If you like surprises and aberrations, this might be for you! There is something kind of neat about the jagged little color rings that result from popped bubbles. And I love the hammer-head designs that result from the liquid spinning out away from your hand too. . There’s a particular finishing pattern that I like to put on a traditional fine chevron, I call it “Ogee Marble Pattern” after the mirrored hourglass pattern of the same name that you’ll sometimes see in carpet designs, architecture, and other ornamented surfaces. When this pattern is traced into the fine line work of marbling it creates billowing shapes that trace down to flicking flames at their base. Do you color inside the lines? . When I color in coloring books with my daughter, sometimes I go completely wild and just scribble color all over the page, or blotch it in the general intended area. I’m working on a new fairy addition to my daughters’ nursery! . Here’s a progress shot. I painted a Peter Pan Neverland mural in their nursery when my first daughter was born, and now add a new fairy on her birthday every year. I love thinking of this as a gift that keeps evolving for my girls over the years. . Who is your favorite Peter Pan character? . My wife, and now my kids, love the Peter Pan story. She and I always dreamed up the fun things that we could do to prepare a nursery for our kids someday. When “someday” became “WOAH, we’re having kids right now!” I got to work on a Neverland mural. . I think I got very invested in the weight of all of our dreams, and I really went for it, painting every wall. Working around life, it took me 2 years to get the mural done. This was way longer than we wished it would take, but the bonus is that my daughter remembers me painting it, and she even got to join me, taking water-soaked brushes and adding “shine” to the painting. . It has become a bit of a living mural, growing with my kids. On their birthdays I add to the painting. I thought it would be fun to share it with you! . Shown is last year’s fairy. Ever wonder how a piece of art marbling comes together, from material prep through assembly? . I’ve got a new project in the works, and I’ve got snippets from every step so far. . All the materials for the marbling has to be prepared a few days in advance. The bath water thickens up and matures, the inks are freshly mixed, and the paper is treated with a mordant. . In this particular case I’m using the marbled paper products as collage material in a larger piece. It’s so nice to be able to marble in real time, then turn around and apply the textures and patterns direct. . With every step, I can assess what I need, and jump back in the marbling tray to make just the right color, effect, or pattern. . 🌟Lots of people love their sketchbooks. That’s great! . However, sometimes the rhetoric around building a sketchbook practice just kind of hits me as “Habit-Builders’ Babble”. . I’ve filled sketchbooks one after the other before. I’ve even encouraged it in the classroom setting to students. But to be honest, it never felt so important to me as it is to others. And I’ve slowly gotten away from promoting its merits. . Here are the problems I have with sketchbooks: ❌they feel too important ❌they have a spine that’s often in the way ❌bleed-through of media can be an issue, unless you are using an expensive sketchbook ❌there is an implied suggestion that you should be consistent in quality throughout, by virtue of it being a book, which suggests an attitude towards “finish” . The REAL point is that drawing is a great way to think, and whatever system makes it easier for you to draw readily, that’s the system you should follow! . 🌟For me it makes more sense to buy a thick stack of cheap sulphite paper, the kind they buy in bulk for children’s art classrooms. They come in a variety of sizes, they are awesome with dry media, they are cheap, and THEY AREN’T BOUND, which is a flexibility I love. . My real advice is don’t let anyone trick you into thinking there’s one format for any of this. Figure out what works best for you. . And if what works best for you is a sketchbook, that’s rad! I love seeing the beautiful and personal sketchbook creations people make! Keep at it. The rest of us will have to shuffle our scraps and bind our books ourselves after the fact (which is another cool thing to do.) . It is created in marbled acrylics, laid first in a series of backward nesting hues around the color wheel. These nested colors, once integrated into the pattern, become a gradient like a rainbow. . When I make a piece like this, sometimes the process is enough to propel me into the making. But sometimes I want something more, I’m searching to go deeper. And when that happens, I find it helpful to simply ponder. . Pondering becomes questions. Questions become investigations and meditations. And the things I proceed to make become fragments of my thoughts along these meditations. . The questions don’t need to be deeply inspired. 🌟A lyric from a song might get you going. 🌟A phenomena from nature might make a spark. ⚡️ That word thing your cousin said might do it. . 💧Long before the first drop hits the bath … . The bath needs to be prepared! . I use a carageenan bath to suspend my marbling paints. The product comes as a powder that I mix to the right viscosity to service my designs. . Carageenan is extracted from seaweed, and is often used in the food industry to thicken things like ice creams. . There are many ways to prepare a bath: I use carageenan, but others might use methyl cellulose or gum tragacanth. It’s all particular to the exact chemistries the marbler wants to employ! . There’s a lot of science happening in marbling, but the truth is most of us lean back on tradition. It just works. It’s fun to understand how it works, but when push comes to shove, just do what has worked for centuries. . I love watching the thickened water move. My dry rack is filled with marbleworks on a new substrate . . . . I had a few students take my paper marbling workshop. It turns out they are textile artists, working in quilting, soft sculpture, and more. They asked if I’d do a workshop for their friends all built towards marbling on fabric. . I’m a paper nerd, its probably one of my biggest draws to marbling. But I’m also open-minded and love companions on an art journey, so when they asked, I said yes, let’s make it happen! . There is always a trade-off when you switch up materials, and switching from paper to cotton has that too. But I was really impressed by all of our results. Marbling fabric isn’t technically too different from paper, but it changes so much about the tactile experience! . So now my mind is revved up about what I might do with marbleized cotton. Stay tuned! . Trying new materials is sometimes all you need to discover a new path forward and turn up your curiosity. . Thanks to my students for leading me in this direction, lots of fun. . What’s in a signature? . Signing the art is a loaded gesture. It signals completion, pride, and authorship. It caries the baggage of the ego, but the joyous freedom to proudly put your mark on your labor, to own your voice. . It is also an artistic mark. When it is on the face of the work, it does have a bearing on the visual whole. . Some would say they can tell a lot about your personality through your signature. Is it practiced and refined, or does it reveal abandon and recklessness? . My own signature has evolved over time. When I started I used huge all caps block letters. (I had read advice from Jim Lee, the comic artist, to make your signature as clear to read as possible). Now I often prefer my cursive, natural hand. I love how a brush can lend a thick belly to the down strokes, which I rhyme in my “K” and my “G”. . How do you sign your art? Is it a big moment for you, or do you do it without thought? The 500 Aprons of Keith Garubba . I was working in the art studio, powering along, feeling good about progress! . Casually ending my day, I took off my apron. Much to my surprise, still upon my chest, where my first apron had left, there remained another apron! . Only two conclusions were available to me at this moment. The first possible conclusion was that at some point , already wearing an apron, I went ahead and put a second apron on, tied it off, not even noticing the one beneath. This conclusion requires some, erm, humility. I much prefer the second conclusion: that much like in Dr Seuss’ 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins, I have been imbued with the magical ability to generate infinite numbers of aprons as I continually try to remove them! . At an open-studio demonstration last week, I made these attempts to illustrate a Cupid/cherub/putti all night in the marbling medium. These 7 cupids were the result. They vary immensely, but some are particularly ridiculous. Look out for the “South Park” Cupid, or the “Shin Chan” Cupid in the mix. . Have you had a mentor whose wisdom took a long time to set in? . This particular teacher of mine was a kind man, I believe a brilliant artist, but his advice sometimes felt like riddles to me. . He rarely spoke directly (at least to me). At the beginning of my graduate school experience, I had the habit of taking incredibly detailed notes on the things that my various mentors said to me. Then I’d study them for days. My notes from his visits were puzzles that I couldn’t crack. I remember following him out of the room and down the hallway after his visits to seek clarity on what he meant. . Things got better for me when I learned to stop taking notes and instead, right after a visit, take a walk. The walks helped my subconscious to reach the abstract messages he had laid out in his feedback. . Criticism for art is funny. Sometimes the sharpest criticisms are kindness masquerading as poison.
